Vince Welnick, keyboardist and one of the founders of The Tubes (one of my personal favourite bands) and also keyboardist with Grateful Dead and Todd Rundgren, died June 2, 2006 in Sonoma County at the age of 55. The cause appears to be suicide, Sonoma County sheriff's department said. Welnick, was classically trained and spent hours practicing each day. Although he was a member of the Greatful Dead for just five years, until the band folded after the death of guitarist Jerry Garcia, he left an indelible mark on his bandmates. "He was a good soul, a very sweet guy," said band spokesman Dennis McNally. "He was also an exceptionally competent keyboardist." Welnick auditioned for the Greatful Dead in 1990 after keyboardist Brent Mydland died of a drug overdose. He immediately impressed the band. Welnick was close to Jerry Garcia of the Greatful Dead, and when the guitarist died of a heart attack in 1995, Mr. Welnick fell into a deep depression. Vince Welnick is survived by his wife, Lori Welnick.
