The alto saxophonist and composer Ornette Coleman, one of the most powerful and contentious innovators in the history of jazz, died during the morning June 11th, 2015 in Manhattan. He was 85. The cause was cardiac arrest. Coleman’s greatest breakthrough came in 1959, with his albums The Shape of Jazz to Come, a break from the bebop style that had been so influential in the genre, and a landmark in avant garde jazz.
