Scott McKenzie

The Mamas and the Papas

Died: 2012-08-18
Age: 73
Cause: Nerve disease

Scott McKenzie, whose 1967 hit 'San Francisco' became an anthem for the 1967 Summer of Love has died at his home in Los Angeles, aged 73. McKenzie, who had been in and out of hospital since being diagnosed two years earlier with Guillaine-Barré syndrome, a disease of the nervous system, had been "very ill" the last week before he passed away. After a subsequent tour with the Mamas and the Papas, McKenzie never had another hit single. He took a break from the music business. In the late 1980s he made a sort of comeback when he co-wrote “Kokomo,” that became a No. 1 hit for the Beach Boys.
